Description
This course is designed to explore and master the fundamentals of editorial design in today’s context, where print publications coexist with a wide range of digital content. Throughout the course, you will learn how to conceptualize ideas, develop complete editorial projects, and make creative decisions that strengthen visual and narrative discourse. From the history of editorial design to the delivery of final artwork, this course will guide you through every phase of the process: research, content creation, design, and production. Ideal for designers looking to broaden their perspective, acquire essential tools and methodologies, and create publications that resonate across both physical and digital platforms.
Contents
Session 1: Purpose and Function of Publications
We will explore the purpose of publications within editorial design. We'll analyze their role as a communication medium and a tool to connect with readers. Together, we will reflect on the intent behind each project and discuss examples of key references.
Session 2: Resources: Typography, Images, and Graphics
We will review the fundamental tools of graphic design to build effective visual systems. Alongside Edu, we’ll explore the use of typography, images, and graphic elements, developing strategies to enhance the visual narrative of your publications.
Session 3: Composition and Information Hierarchy
You will learn how to structure editorial content by applying principles of graphic design and visual hierarchy. We will engage in practical exercises to organize information clearly and attractively, maximizing both visual and functional impact.
Session 4: Print Production and Digital Environments
We will uncover the technical processes behind editorial production, from printing to digital publishing. You’ll learn how to adapt designs for different media and prepare final files, ensuring quality and consistency across all formats.
Requirements
You will need to have Adobe InDesign installed on your computer, along with curiosity and an interest in editorial design. Edu will guide you through everything else, ensuring you enjoy and learn from the process.
Teaching Team
Edu Martínez Piracés is a designer, editor, photographer, and educator. His work focuses on creative direction, editorial design, and digital experiences within the fields of culture, art, and fashion. Trained at the Eina School (UAB, Barcelona), he has worked in studios such as Clase (Barcelona), Stdin (Brussels), and Other Means (New York). He has also been part of the Open Source Publishing collective (Brussels) and has conducted lectures, workshops, residencies, and exhibitions at institutions such as Sandberg Instituut (Amsterdam), Reina Sofía Museum (Madrid), Fanfare (Amsterdam), ExperimentaDesign Biennial (Lisbon), and Frans Masereel Centrum (Brussels), among others.
