What does art direction mean to you?

It can be something delicate and a bit subjective because, depending on the discipline we’re working in, it takes on different nuances. Sometimes, when I least expect it, I find myself defending a typeface as if my life depended on it. In my experience, art direction is about seeking an aesthetic harmony that gives meaning and coherence to an idea, ensuring that every gesture flows in dialogue with the creative intention.

    Josep Román

I’m Josep Román, an art director and graphic designer based in Barcelona. Educated at Elisava and ECAL in Lausanne, my work spans art direction, editorial design, and visual identity, exploring the relationship between concept, form, and content as an inseparable whole. In 2015, I co-founded Affaire with Pol Pérez, a studio working with national and international clients in the fields of fashion, culture, and consumer goods. Each project seeks a balance between clarity, intention, and beauty, creating pieces that exist for a reason and stand the test of time. Teaching allows me to share processes and question how we think about design. I see education as a space to nurture critical vision and help others find their own visual voice.
