What does art direction mean to you?

To make things in a meaningful way - be it a book, a space, a photo series or anyhting and else. To me art direction means you have an intention, every detail is chosen for a reason and considered with care. I think it’s also about collaborating closely with other teams and artists to make something beautiful.

    Valerie Steenhaut

I’m Valerie Steenhaut, an art director and freelance associate creative director at Mouthwash Studio. Originally from Belgium and now based in Barcelona, my work moves between art direction and publishing, exploring how every detail can carry meaning and intention. I’ve collaborated on projects ranging from cultural publications to architectural studios, always driven by the curiosity to understand what lasts beyond the ephemeral. My practice is nourished by books, magazines, and photography, as well as personal passions like horseback riding and the sea—sources of inspiration that I continue to cultivate as spaces for reflection and creation.
